Notes from the President
Barbara Bozon, Judy Duer and I attended the District Conference this past week-end in Austin at the Airport Hilton Hotel. Barbara, chairman of the District Roll of Fame Committee, made an excellent presentation of recipients receiving this honor in 2007-08. Judy Duer, immediate past chairman of the Roll of Fame Committee, assisted Barabara. Judy read Barbara's citation when Barbara received her Roll of Fame Certificate. Barbara had, incidentally, read Judy's citation last year when Judy received hers! These two Rotarians, Barbara and Judy, are wonderful examples of Service Above Self.
I learned this past week-end that District 5870 will end this year on June 30th with an increase in membership over where it stood on July 1, 2007. The net gain is due to creation of new clubs! Already we have at least two new Rotary Clubs in operation since last July 1st, and there are several more in varying stages of development. In all likelihood, we'll see two more new clubs come on-line before Curlee's term ends and one or more shortly after Ronny Reynolds takes office.
One of the most fascinating presentations at the District Conference came from a young man speaking about characteristics of Generation Y, those born between 1977 and 1995. While the young man was hilarious, he was deadly accurate, too, I am sure. It does delight me greatly to observe that our club is already working on enlisting young men and women into Rotary, and we need to do more in this respect.
Lonzo Wallace Discusses Upcoming Bond Election
Fire Chief and Rotarian, Lonzo Wallace, discussed the details of the upcoming Temple Fire & Rescue Bond Election. On May 10th, Temple citizens will be asked to vote on a $13.5 million bond issue. Included in the bond are several projects that are designed to maintain or improve service levels and response times to all parts of the city, as well as to address growth and development. The projects include: A new Central Fire Station #1/Administration; a new facility which would combine Fire Station #8, the Training Center, and Emergency Operations Center (EOC); and Fire Engine Replacements for engines number 1 and 4. The Training Center is needed to provide additional space for classroom and field-based training of the firefighters on current practices. The EOC is needed to manage all natural and man-made emergencies through one central location. The bond package would cost taxpayers approximately one cent per $100 valuation. For more information about the bond issue, call 254-298-5682.
