President's Message
Hello fellow Rotarians. I hope you have had a great week.
If you looked in the Club News Section of the Sunday, Temple Daily Telegram you would have seen a listing for the Temple Rotary Club. It mentioned this week's speaker, the club location and time, and the cost of the meal. Gail Peek is doing a wonderful job of publicity chair; this is great publicity for our club. Thank you Gail.
I have to remind everyone of the challenge to all the members of the Temple Rotary Club to look out into the community and bring ONE NEW MEMBER into the club this year, and to make sure they become active in club activities. We have lost Brian Nelson this week and we will miss him.
We have changed the time and day of the monthly board meetings to best accommodate this year's board. The first board meeting of the New Year is this Wednesday, July 22nd at noon. The location is 8 N. 9th, Susan Connolly's house in downtown Temple. You can find the time, place and date of the board meetings on our website. Just go to www.templerotary.org and then to the "officers & Directors" page. At the bottom of this page you will find the board meeting information.
I have added a page to the website called "Scheduled Programs". This page has the July, August and September programs listed. The website is a very powerful tool we should all utilize. www.templerotary.org CHECK IT OUT!
Last Weeks Message
Rotarian of the Day, John Hancock, introduced our guest speaker, Dr. Robin Battershell, TISD Superintendent. It was a very thorough discussion about creating stability in the school district. There has been a reorganization of four departments in the school district: Curriculum & Instruction, Student Services, Human Resources and Finance & Facilities.
Under Curriculum & Instruction, there were 132 curriculum modules written and implemented, A+ curriculum implemented, added instructional coaches for 2009-2010, added accountability walks in the classrooms, received an early childhood grant ($500,000) and the special education monitor has been removed.
Under Student Services, a complete policy review was done, including a corporal punishment review, reviewed commencement requirements, tighter discipline, received a ($1.5 mil)/Juvenile Justice Grant.
Under Human Resources, a $100,000 mentor grant was received for the teachers, all pay grades were re-evaluated, reduced positions, increased efficiency, teachers received a pay increase. Software was added to the district website in order to receive job applications on line.
Under Finance & Facilities, federal stimulus ($3.2 mil), 2007 bond completion, balanced the budget (actual budget reduced by $2.1 million)
In the next school year the district is implementing a mentor program for 60 children. The district needs mentors from the community to match with the children. What a great opportunity to make a difference in a child's life! Just call Dr. Battershells office at 254-215-TISD (8473) if you want to participate.
