It is time to start thinking about the next major fundraiser, The Bloomin' Temple Tour. If you would like to sponsor this event or know of a business or individual who might like to sponsor please let me know. Last Weeks Program

Our program last week was an inspirational story from President Susan, who told the story of her brother Mark Sterle, who went from being an exceptional gymnast to not being able to move his arms and legs at age 18 after a fall while doing a back flip off a balcony onto a floor mat during a gymnastics camp in Florida. Susan says Mark, as her older brother was always her hero, but never more than since he had his accident. After months in the hospital and re-hab, Mark returned to school and got both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in computer science from Texas A&M University. Although he has to have everything done for him, from getting him out of bed and into his chair, to feeding him, Mark lives on his own with multiple people working for him to care for him. In his career in computer systems he earned multiple honors, and he also with a friend developed the “puff & sip” wheel chair which he uses to get around. He has also trained a dog to be a service animal, and can be seen wheeling around College Station parks with the dog by his side. Although retired now, he and Susan have a business together selling Boy Scout “Arrow of Light” awards online.
Some of the more unexpected things about Mark are that although he had to re-learn to breath without a respirator, he is now an excellent harmonica player, and he drinks beer through a straw from a pitcher!
Although Mark is one of her heroes, Susan’s mother comes through as another one. Her mom was the one who determined that Mark would not die, and stayed by his side until it was clear he would make it. She rallied the whole family around him and everyone learned to take care of his needs. Since Mark’s injury happened before the family could open their Christmas presents that year, the Sterle family waited until Mark could come home to open their presents—in July. When asked what the family learned from this experience Susan shared that the family became a team in taking care of Mark, and they learned that there’s not a lot of time to live, and you should never hesitate to say “I love you”.
If you’d like to find out more about Mark Sterle, you can go to his website, www.MarkSterle.com which he maintains to help other accident victims learn to adapt.
