Notes from the President
The Bloomin' Temple Tour went very smoothly last weekend! I want to thank Jack Jones and Bill Stokes for doing a great job organizing the event this year. It is a large project and difficult to get everything coordinated. I also wanted to thank all the volunteers who helped make this a successful fund raising event. We will have a rundown of the event this week.
ATTENTION!!!!
This Friday April 16 at 1:00pm is the EAFK Tournament of Champions & Knighting Ceremony. This is a very exciting and visual event and it will be important to have as many Rotarians at this event to see the action. This is the event where all the war horses and knights show up to put on a show for the kids at Lakewood Elementary school. It will be a great opportunity to watch how EAFK is effecting the lives of the children at Lakewood. Please put this on your calendar and come to the event. It will be a rare event to see.

Last Weeks Program - by Judy Duer
John Redington - Trip to Australia
Last week we were treated to a visual trip to Australia, as Cameron (and Temple) attorney John Redington told us about his GSE team’s visit “down under” in 2006. At that time, Redington was not a Rotarian, but because of his experience with Rotarians during the GSE trip he has since joined. Temple Rotarians may remember when the Australian GSE team visited our club and talked about their homeland and agriculture there. Redington was a member of our team which visited their state of New South Wales that same year. During their visit the team had an opportunity to visit the state legislature and see it in action, they also visited a sheep farm (and sheared sheep), Rupert Murdock’s ranch, and saw the Kelpies (dogs) herding Herefords. Other events included meeting the Prime Minister, a plane tour of the area where the team leader got to pilot the plane, and a surfing expedition. They also saw lots of wildlife, including crocodiles, kangaroos, emus, echidnas, whales and penguins. And of course they visited lots of clubs, stayed with Rotarians there, and made presentations about Texas.
Redington says that the Australians are like Texans in that they like football (the other football), barbecue (not spicy enough), and to have fun. He summarized his experience by saying that he couldn’t say enough about the GSE program, and that he is hoping to relive the experience by revisiting New South Wales eventually.
For the “rest of the story”, the team’s Rotarian leader, Gaines Bagby, approached me as district youth exchange chair after the trip and proposed that we start an exchange between our district and the district they visited. He put me in touch with their chair, and we began working on exchanges. So far we have received two Australian students, sent out one (Mark Jezek, sponsored by Temple South) and will be sending our own club’s outbound, Drew Latimer, there in the fall. GSE and Youth Exchange: two ways that Rotary works for world peace and understanding!
