Well, this week is my last week as your president and there will be an overview of the year and a changing of the guard. It has been my privilege to serve as president of the Temple Rotary Club this year. My board has done a tremendous job in their areas. I also want to thank Jack Jones and Bill Stokes for heading up the Bloomin' Temple Tour and Stephanie Turnham for taking on the Spaghetti Supper. See everyone Thursday!

Dorothy Powell - Vocational Award Winner

Last meeting Temple Rotarians honored our own Dorothy Powell with the Rotary Vocational Award. Dorothy is a Temple native and after graduating from high school here, went on to be a teacher and principal in the Temple Schools. She was married to Alison Powell, who was also a well respected educator in the Temple schools. Following Dorothy’s 36 years working for TISD, she ran for school board, and has continued to serve the children of Temple in that way.
The program, organized by John Bandas brought in a wide variety of people to honor Dorothy’s achievements. The guests included fellow students, sorority sisters, teachers and principals, and also fellow school board members. Kicking off the tribute was a couple of people who grew up with Dorothy. Rotarian Delores Sims and Bobbie Nell Pennigton remembered graduating with Dorothy from Dunbar school back in 1949 when Mr. Meredith was principal. They said that Dorothy always went to the spelling contests at Prairie View and always won. They also commented that she loved to work at church and in the community, and was secretary of her Sunday School class. Representing the school system was during the time she was a teacher and principal were Gail Leidy, former Superintendent Marilyn Hoster, and Coach Cain, all of whom spoke fondly of her.
Members of the Zetas, Dorothy’s sorority, were represented by Elaine McCoy, Sonjenette Crossley, and Joyce Adams. Several of them had had Dorothy as a teacher in grade school at Crestview, and seemed honored to now be her sorority sister. They noted that as a teacher, Dorothy was someone you could always talk to. Another student of hers was another Rotarian, Larry Wilkerson, who said she was his third grade teacher. One of the things he learned in her class he said was that if he got his work done quickly, he could leave early. This was a lesson he took to heart, and is still following today (thus the early departures from Rotary)!
Several amusing stories were told to highlight the fact that Dorothy was “tough but fair”, as fellow school board member Ramsey Farley described her. Roscoe Harrison described the time in the ‘50’s when she was substituting in the Belton school district, and substituted with his 9th grade class. A fellow student of his called “Peepsie” tried to test the mettle of the substitute, but when Dorothy threatened to “fit a book on her head” she backed down. Rae Allen principal Gail Leidy told how during the time they were fellow teachers there was a phone for the teachers to share (no phones in the rooms at that time). If a teacher tried to exceed the posted time limit, Dorothy would just push the button and end the call.
Steve Wright and Jerry Pickle both commented on their time on the school board with Dorothy and described her as “student oriented to the core” and gave credit to her for the wealth of knowledge and information she brought with her, as well as her character.
Dorothy’s reaction when Steve Wright presented her with the award was to say “I didn’t know I was being noticed”, a modest reaction from a special lady. Congratulations on this well deserved award, Dorothy!
