Notes from the President
Here we are already into the third week of our 2010 - 2011 Rotary year. I have enjoyed my limited time as President of this great Club and have appreciated all of the kind comments and suggestions on how to make this a successful year. I look forward to the next year and all of the great opportunities that await us. We have some great projects in the works that will allow us to continue our Club's history of service to our community. We will continue to update you on the proposed projects and their status as the year progresses.
While there was not a Rotatips published last week with a summary of the previous week's meeting, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Past District Governor Tom Chamberlain for performing our Induction Ceremony on July 1st. I am especially thankful to Tom for getting each of you to verbally agree to assist me and the current Board of Directors in achieving our Rotary Goals for the year. We are hopeful there will be many opportunities for service this year. The Board of Directors has placed an emphasis on bringing the fellowship aspect into our service projects and doing some more "hands on" projects this year. So we will be asking you for your time in addition to your monetary contributions.
On a club business note, it is the middle of summer and our attendance has reflected that. Apparently the excitement of a young, energetic, handsome new administration has not been enough to overcome the allure of Summer. While I may not be all of the things listed in that previous sentence (I'll let you choose which ones I am not and you are under no obligation to share your observations with me), I am fairly clever at times. So, it was by much clever and shrewd (read -- pure luck) planning that I was able to get the Association of the Army to stage their annual golf tournament and luncheon at the same time as our regular meeting last week Thereby moving us to the smaller Rose Room and creating the illusion of a better attendance. However, we will be back in the main dining room this week and I would like to see a "full room" this Thursday. We have some great programs lined up and as always are open to suggestions from the membership.
Board of Directors
Due to business obligations, John King will not be able to continue his role as Board Member at Large. John will continue to be a Rotarian in our Club, but will not be serving on the Board. In accordance with the Club By-Laws, the Board met after last week's meeting and appointed Jerry Burkhart to fulfill this position. Jerry had previously agreed to oversee the continued development and updating of the web site.

Susan Bolton -- Ronald McDonald House
We had the pleasure of having Miss Temple Rotary -- 1973, Susan Bolton, speak to us about the Ronald McDonald House. The Temple Ronald McDonald House opened in 1986 and Mrs. Bolton began working there in 1990. She was amazed to find that Rotary had been one of the larger donors with a contribution of $75,000. Since opening in 1986, the Temple RMH has provided lodging for over 8,500 families from around the world. Worldwide, there are currently 298 Ronald McDonald Houses, 149 Family Rooms and 39 Care Mobiles.
The Temple RMH meets operating costs primarily through fundraisers. McDonald's provides the seed money for each house, but does not fund the operations. Each RMH is independently owned and operated. The House is a home away from home for families that live greater than 35 miles from the hospital at which their child is being treated. The cost per family is $10 per night. Susan noted that premature babies were one of the most prevalent reasons for families to have extended stays at the House.
Susan spoke extensively about the Ronald McDonald Rooms. The RM Room is a private room within a hospital that families (parents) can go to get away from the "hospital life". The room is furnished similar to what a small apartment would be and includes washing machine, dryer, couch, etc. The RMH is currently in the planning stage of working with the S&W Children's Hospital at KDH to provide a RM Room on the 4th Floor. Susan noted that while local families could not use the RM House because they lived within the 35 mile range, they would be allowed to use the RM Room. We have been in preliminary talks with the RMH concerning our Rotary Club participating in the Ronald McDonald Room through our Major Matching Grant program. We appreciate Susan updating us on the RMH and helping us to remember that we have many thinks to be thankful for....
